Boat Trailers Some Worthwhile Features To Watch For

By David Faulkner

Before embarking on purchasing or constructing boat trailers, for sure there are certain qualities which you have in mind, no matter how big or how small the boat trailers are. You will find here a few tips to help you decide which types of boat trailers to buy or construct.

The foundation of boat trailers are their frames. They should therefore be really sturdy to last a long time. Boat trailers are usually metal-made, strengthened by welding at major tension areas on the frame.

They can also be made of wood, metal, and hard plastic. But you have to ensure that they are strong enough to withstand the heaviness of your boat over an extensive usage period and be able to survive extreme weather conditions.

Another factor to look into before buying boat trailers is its roadworthiness. It is to your advantage if the water is within the proximity of your home. More often, you would need to travel a few miles through roads and highways from your storage area to get to your destination.

Therefore the boat trailers you would have to acquire are those with heavy-duty tires and axles that would be able to turn with ease in traffic or in the freeway.
How the boat trailers attach to the cars, trucks, or recreational vehicles is also another factor to think about.

The procedure must not be that tedious or cumbersome. It should also be equipped with safety features so that no bolts and screws become loose during travel. Highly recommended are ball joints with durable chain attachments. Other fastening devices should also be functional rather than decorative over the long term.

Boat trailers also require periodic maintenance to be able to maximize its useful life. It is therefore suggested to give the above tips some careful thinking before purchasing or constructing your boat trailers.

Traditional sailboats are monohulls, but multi-hull catamarans and trimarans are gaining popularity. Monohull boats generally rely on ballast for stability, and generally are known as displacement hulls. This stabilizing ballast can be on the order of multiple tons of lead, for a 12m (39 Ft.) boat. However, it creates two problems; one, that this gives the monohull a tremendous inertia, making it less maneuverable and reducing its acceleration. Secondly, if the boat ever fills with water, it will sink immediately, without question.

Cruising yachts are by the far the most common yacht in private use, making up most of the 25' to 45' (7 m to 14 m) range. These vessels can be quite complex in design, as they need a balance between docile handling qualities, interior space, good light-wind performance and on-board comfort. The huge range of such craft, from dozens of builders worldwide, makes it hard to give a single illustrative description. However, most favour a teardrop-planform hull, with a wide, flat bottom and deep single-fin keel to give good stability. Most are single-masted Bermuda rigged sloops, with a single fore-sail of the jib or Genoa type and a single mainsail. Spinnaker sails,in various sizes, are often supplied for down-wind use. These types are often chosen as family vessels, especially those in the 30- to 40-foot (8 to 12 m) range. Such a vessel will usually have many cabins below deck. Typically there will be three double-berth cabins; a single large saloon with galley, seating and navigation equipment; and a "head" consisting of a toilet and shower-room.

40' - 45' Bluewater Cruiser?!

Fri, 24 Oct 2008 19:10:48 +0200
I'm looking to purchase my first sailboat and I am in need of some guidance. I was leaning towards a steel or aluminum hull but most do not have a swim step and walk through transom. It sounds kind of odd but the is a top criteria for me. Three reasons: it is easier to land big fish, it is easiers to board from a tender, and I have a dog who loves the water and if she jumps I need to get her back aboard somehow. Do you know of any steel hulled sloop or cutter rigs that have a walk through transom and a swim step?! I am looking at the 40'-45' range.
